    http://www.tabulas.com it gives you html freedom of blogger and security of livejournal. what i dont like about tabulas is its url. but i think its features are what matters most.

I gotta go with Xanga on this one. To get an advertisement free blogsite, you usually have to pay a few bucks (like Xanga), but to get it free, you have to put up with adverts (like Xanga). The adverts on Xanga are far less annoying and easier for the reader to close as well. There are plethora of skins available that you can easily customize and a good deal of independent skins that people put together outside of Xanga. A good thing to do is to visit each site and before you go through the hassles of registering and playing around with them, just view the types of things people are doing on them ... I think you'll find that Xanga is more or less the defacto home of the serious blogging community ... that doesn't make it better, just that you're more likely to run into serious minded folks with some skills that you can tap into for your own.
