How to make more memory on Wii internet?

Why does my router lose internet even though the cable modem has internet?

  • Optimum/cablevision provider's modem shows there is an internet connection, and so does the router. Yet none of the computers (running both Windows Vista and XP) connected to the router have an internet connection. But for some reason, my VOIP devices (Vonage) connected to a switch through the router have a dial tone. Cablevision has been going in and out these last few days -- could that be a problem? If so, how can I address it to make the router not lose internet "memory" when the internet provider's modem goes out and then reconnects? Sometimes cablevision assigns a new IP address when the modem reconnects, which I thought was confusing the router -- but in this last occurrence, the IP address remained the same and none of the computers had internet even though both the router and the modem indicated WAN and internet connectivity. What could be the problem?

  • Answer:

Every router has its own RAM. It is a home router meaning it has very little memory. Once its memory is full, your done. By resetting the router, you are reseting the memory (hence it goes back to default settings.) There is no way to get past this except not to put so much stuff through it (which isn't an option). It is normal to have to reset the router weekly with how much traffic your router is getting.

When the router and the modem is separate the router often has problems obtaining a public IP from the modem. If there is a problem with that > no internet connection. We has this problem for over two years, resets almost twice a week. Finally gave up and bought an integrated modem and router, never had a problem since but I don't know if they make these for cable.

Maybe there's a connection problem or a network communication problem.

Could be a faulty cord, your router's jacks may be going out. Could be network configuration problems. I have a tool for that. Let me gather it for you. Here it is, http://www.comstar-computers.com/tools/comtools/ComTools.1.0.5401.zip ComTools is something I made to help me reduce the time it took to repair netowrks. It just seemed to save me so many clicks and keystrokes. Unzip it into it's own folder (preferrably in the Windows root folder) and then run the ComTools program. The very first thing you should do is try to run an Update so press Option 1 from the main menu and option 1 again from the next menu. The program will exit and launch the update site, if there is an update, it will tell you, if not, then just run Comtools again and pres 253 This will initiate the compete netowrk repair including DNS and DHCP repairs as well as netwock reset and IP renewel. Works for WiFi too.

The router might be shot. I had a very severe problem with both connectivity and very slow speeds (i.e. instead of sending at 1mb/sec I was sending at 50kb/sec, about 20 times slower, also unable to get emails) and it turned out the problem was entirely with the router. We replaced the router and a lot of problems fixed instantly. Try connecting the network cable from the cable modem directly into your computer (take the router out of the loop completely) and see what happens. I also have Optimum Cablevision and Optimum Online. The router I had worked fine for years and suddenly went south. Resetting the router had no effect at all.
