Why cant my laptop find my router?

My laptop can't connect to the internet via LAN/WLAN after resetting settings of router. how can i fix it?

  • here's the story; my 1st laptop (Hp Dv6000) connects to the internet normally, via lan cable or wirelessly. then i got a new laptop (dell latitude d400) and it can't access my internet at home, but it can access if connected via lan cable my dad told me to reset the settings of the wireless router for the new laptop to work. after reseting the wireless router, the new laptop's internet worked, but my old laptop cant connect to the internet by WIFI or by LAN. if i try to connect via: WIFI- the computer say's that it has a poor connection to the router and/or to find another wireless connection. LAN- it says that i have to restart the modem and router, to reset the IP address automatically, i tried all the options that the computer throw at me but nothing happens.. still no connection..) what should i do for both the laptop's internet to work fine?? thanks in advance

whats your router? are you using windows XP or VISTA? Make sure that: -router is setup properly. -wireless adapter is working. -network adapter is working. -TCP/IP properties are automatically obtained. TCP/IP go to the network's properties window. On general tab, under this connection uses ... select tcp/ip then click on properties button. select automatic for both IP Address & DNS server click close click Ok WIRELESS On your Wireless Connection Wizard Properties Window. click wireless network tab then remove all your preferred networks and click advanced button. select any available network button then click close. click OK. Go back to your Wireless Network Connection window & refresh the list hope this will work =>

I'm not sure how your router is setup but check to see if the Wi-fi card in your first laptop is 802.11a (802.11a doesn't work with 802.11b & 802.11g) So if your router is set to broadcast using b or g the 802.11a Wi-fi card won't be allow t join the network. Also make sure that the router is not set to use any type of MAC filtering.
