How can I find out my internet speed?

  • I'm paying my cable company for high speed internet service but it doesn't seem very fast. If the cable company is providing what I'm paying for, is there anything else that could be slowing it down?

    Cable company may advertise 15 Megabits, but you may only get 8 - 10 Mbps. That is because it is a shared line. Many of your neighbors share the bandwidth on that cable. If they all get on the computer and start streaming movies or downloading, the Internet speed will degrade. There are other factors as well. Weather and temperature has a certain affect. Your computer and router setting come in to play too. However, if your Internet speed is significantly slow on a regular basis, call the cable company. Usually on Windows theres an icon in the bottom right that shows the internet connection speed If that doesnt work, then you may want to get a wired connection, but its not so reccomended because its wired and you have a limit to movement on a laptop. For a computer, you probably should get one or maybe not. Also, it could be the company's issue with the internet I suppose

Could be many things including your ISP's DNS configuration. For reference go to: http://www.grc.com/dns/benchmark.htm If you understand the concepts, download the utility and run it (it is completely safe!!). Once you have the results contact your ISP and talk to them. Also remember, your provider says its speed are UP TO some figure, there is no Minimum speed they have to meet!!
