What is the difference between Ubuntu 9 and Ubuntu 10.10?

    Ubuntu has a six monthly release cycle. Differences between releases can vary however some are more noticeable than others. For example Ubuntu 9.04 was the last release to feature grub-legacy and ext3 as default (subsequent releases use GRUB2 and ext4). Overall the latter is faster however on older software Ubuntu 9.04 performance is better than that of more recent releases. Each release is built upon a different Kernel Ubuntu 9.04 (Kernel 2.6.28) Ubuntu 9.10 (Kernel 2.6.31) Ubuntu 10.04 LTS (Kernel 2.6.32) Ubuntu 10.10 (Kernel 2.6.35) Ubuntu 10.04 LTS is different as it benefits from Long Term Support. A normal release recieves 18 months of support whereas an LTS release recieves 3 years of support. Overall an LTS release will be more stable than a standard release. I work with Linux Mint which is built upon Ubuntu and consider Linux Mint 9 LTS (Ubuntu 10.04 LTS) to be the most stable closely followed by Linux Mint 10 (Ubuntu 10.10) At this point it should be mentioned that Ubuntu 11.04 is unstable and the same follows for Linux Mint 11 so both should be avoided. 1.10, lol you dont write the 0 so it's 1.1 compatability issues and things like that are usually sorted out as the versions cahnge, better features and more efficiency are usually incorporated. newer versions are usually better.
