What is port forwarding?

What is wrong with my UDP port forwarding settings?

  • I used a free tool on portforwarding.com to check my port forwards. The analysis showed that port 25565 (you see where I'm going with this) is works properly with TCP, but apparently the UDP port settings are incorrect. I threw all this technical stuff in there because I figured an expert might know what I'm talking about because I, certainly don't :P Anyhow, I have only one port forwarding rule, and it is set to allow both UDP and TCP, but for some reason, only TCP works. What's wrong?

  • Answer:

Most routers have a setting for "both" when port forwarding, some routers have individual TCP and UDP settings, depends on router. If "both" are allowed through the router properly (check it again...), then any firewall software on the PC may still be blocking UDP. It is common to allow TCP through, but people forget to check UDP settings as well in firewall software.

As your using port 25565, I'm assuming your trying to host a minecraft server. Opening ports makes your computer vulnerable to hackers so it's not recommended in the first place. Instead, download Hamachi and find a tutorial on how to setup a server using Hamachi on youtube. Otherwise if your not playing minecraft and just want to open ports, you can just set up 2 seperate rules. One for UDP and one for TCP instead of having 1 rule that opens both.
