If I change my internet provider, does my IP address change?

How come my ip address never changes when I am supposed to have a dynamic ip address?

  • So my ip address has been staying the same for a very long time and I don't know why it doesn't change over time. My internet provider is Time Warner Cable Road Runner and they claim i have an dynamic ip address which changes constantly each time when i go online. I have an apple airport extreme router that i connect to my cable modem to share my internet connection. How come it doesn't change when I am supposed to have an dynamic ip address ??

    If your router is always turned on it will simply carry on renewing the lease for months on end: _it_ is constantly online even if you are not. Try turning it off overnight and you'll probably find you get a new address in the morning.

Well, if you are talking about the ip address your computer itself has on the local network, it will probably always use the same ip address as the router will reserve that address for your computer. If you are talking about your isp assigned ip address, just because it is dynamic doesn't mean it changes all the time. I had the same ip address for a number or months one time. Had it memorized because I was running game servers and stuff and was so nice it wasn't changing all the time. I wouldn't worry about it, it isn't a big deal one way or another whether your ip address changes or not.

When you get an ip address, you also get a lease on that address. The lease states that you can have that address for x amount of days. When that time is 50% - 75% up, you will request a renewal of the lease. When the renewal completes, you are given that ip address again for another x amount of days. So if you leave your equipment on all the time, you could potentially have the same DHCP address for months at a time.
