What is VPN?

What does the VPN connection in windows vista do?

  • Usually 'new network connection' then VPN and 'use existing internet connection' in windows. In my case vista but it's the same in windows 7 and possibly XP. Question: what does it do? What exactly is VPN? If you have a SSH server at the other end it does not work, so what do you need? Because there is no such thing as a 'VPN Server', is there? I want to allow a vista computer to use this VPN thingy to connect to a linux server. Thanks very much, Luxpsycho

  • Answer:

VPN establishes an password-authenticated, secure connection between 2 device (e.g., the firewall (server) and client router or vlient software running on the remote computer. Essentially, it pretends the client computer(s) is (are) directly attached to the company WAN.
