What is a workgroup and what is a domain in networking?

You can join ur computer to a workgroup or a domain? what are these and whats the diffences? also, on windows 7 home premium, the domain option is greyed out so u can only choose to be on a workgroup...it says windows 7 home premium doesnt allow you to join a domain,..why? thanks for help

A workgroup is a small group of networked Windows computers that are set up to allow file and resource sharing with each other. It's not centralized and any Windows computer can join one. A domain is an organized network of Windows computers controlled by a central computer (a domain controller) that manages user authentication, computer and user permissions, group policy, etc. It's usually only used in business environments. Only Professional, Enterprise, and Ultimate editions of Windows can join a domain.
