You can also try the http://www.thinkbroadband.com/speedtest.html and http://www.speedtest.net websites Other tools on the net, search google for free broadband speed tests, will show more detailed info on connections to various servers around the world. As far as i know "surfing speed" and download speed should be identical. However it depends on the location of the server you transfer the data from. For example a website located in the US will load slower for a UK resident than one found in Europe. also other factors such as bandwith of the websites server and the type of server will also differ in speeds. FTP servers (download sites) usually have more bandwidth and are dedicated to large a volume of data transfer, therefore you may download at a speed closer to your limit than a website not dedicated to this. I hope that helps

Speakeasy: http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/ CNET: http://reviews.cnet.com/7004-7254_7-0.html Generally upload speed is much slower than download speed. Some broadband providers also provide a "speed boost" for the first X MB of a file download so it might be faster than your general web surfing. For example, Comcast provides a "PowerBoost" when downloading a file so you'll get higher speeds for the first 10MB of the file. Thus, your download speed would be faster than your "surfing" speed, at least for the first 10MB of the download. Here's Comcast's FAQ page about PowerBoost: http://www.comcast.net/help/faq/index.jsp?faq=ServicesPowerBoost18504

There is no perfect check, there are several links to another computer on the internet, each of which may be subject to different speed. There are other factors. Speeds quoted when sold are a maximum. Here is speed check link; http://www.thinkbroadband.com/speedtest.html
