How do I connect my router to my laptop?

• I am trying to change the channel on my router. I talked with Linksys tech support and they gave me a site that said to connect my laptop to the router and then type in the generic ip address. I have a few questions.. 1) Should I be able to connect my laptop to the router without connecting it to the modem and still get an internet connection? When I connect my laptop to the router by itself, I get no internet connection. 2). If I need to connect to the modem and the router, I need to know how to be able to do that. I only have one ethernet outlet on my laptop. At this time, it seems impossible to connect to both the router and modem from my laptop. Thank you for sharing your knowledge!

• Answer:

  1) to get internet, SOMETHING has to be connected to the modem. If not, there is NO internet connection because you have not connected it.... 2) You connect the router to the modem, via it's WAN or Internet port, then connect your PCs ai the LAN ports or wireless (if it's configured). You CANNOT connect to modem and router at the same time....
