I need help hooking up my printer to my laptop.

Need help networking printer from desktop to laptop?

  • I need good instruction for connecting desktop computer printer to laptop computer. I have tried over 50 different sets of instructions with out any luck desk top is XP home and laptop is XP professional and is wireless have network wizard on both computer do I need some type of adapter or software to get this to work. it seems the info from laptop had made it to desktop but desktop info will not open on laptop please any help will be grateful have even tried instuctions given previous on this board.

    You don't need any special adapter or software. My printer is hooked up to a wired XP Pro computer and my laptop runs XP Home and is connected through wireless. First, run the Windows update on both computers to make sure you have the most current updates on both computers. Then run the network setup wizard on both computers again. Make sure that you choose the proper method of network connection. For most people that means choosing "Other" and selecting that all computers connect through a router or hub. That will open up the necessary ports in the Windows XP firewall. Also make sure that you indicate to the Network Setup wizard that you are connecting through your wireless conection on your laptop. This is important since it defaults to wired.

on the machine that the printer is attached to, you must enable file and print sharing first. Then, you can "share" the printer giving it a share name like "PC Printer". Then on the other computer, you browse through Network Neighborhood and the share will show up. Then just add a printer connecting to that share.

You probably simply need to enable flile and printer sharing on your laptop. See the windows help file (press F1 on your desktop) on how to enable file and printer sharing on your computer. Be aware that enabling this option can increase some security risks on your computer.
