DNS is Domain Name System. When you type yahoo.com on the browser, it's the domain name. Your machine will send a request to DNS server asking for IP address of yahoo server. Then your machine will get the IP address and send data to that destination. If you could remember destinaion IP address, you could type it in the browser too but it's difficult for users to remember all IP addresses so we need domain names.
