What Is Lan?

My Lan connection does not allow any program to connect to internet, except yahoo massenger, what can I do?

when I use another lan connection, for example lan with usb port, every thing is ok. only with lan connection through cable, the problem exist, also I check my lan modem and it works well.

Could you possibly be running an Internet Security Suite? Like Norton, for example? In prefs you have to specifically allow programs to access the net. Panda completely cut me offline.
