Set-Up a password on my linksys wirless G router?
-
How do i set up a password so people dont steal my wirelss internet. I dont want anyone but me using my paid internet connection.

Answer:
Login to your router. USER is blank and default password is admin. Enable WEP or WPA encryption. Then set MAC address filtering, by entering the MAC addresses of those PCs that you want to have access to your network. The Linksys site has very good examples on how to accomplish these tasks. Disable the SSID brodcast and change the SSID to a name you wish.

By doing a search on Google for "linksys wireless g router password", I was able to find quite a few pages, but it boils down to this: 1) You need to log in to your router. The URL will be: http://192.168.1.1 2) If you have the default settings, leave "User name" blank, and for the password, use "admin" 3) Go to the "Wireless" section 4) Choose a network name (SSID) 5) Choose the "Security" section 6) You will have to choose which security type you want, with different encryption strengths. Read the user guide for details In addition to setting up a password, I'd also recommend setting up "MAC filters". This tells the router to only route traffic from computers you've told it to. Even if someone gets/guesses your password, they won't be able to use your network until you add the "MAC" address to your router's list. If you don't know what a MAC address is, then never mind. I only recommend using it to those who are familiar with what they are, and how to find out a computer's MAC address. To download a user guide for your device, go to the following URL, choose your model, download the PDF http://www.linksys.com/servlet/Satellite?c=L_CASupport_C1&childpagename=US%2FLayout&cid=1166859841396&pagename=Linksys%2FCommon%2FVisitorWrapper&lid=4139637314B03

Use the CD that came with your router. Make sure that you are connected to the same router, run the cd when the setup window shows, click on "Click here to start". note:if you are are using a single router ignore the instruction that asks you to press and hold the Cisco logo or any instruction similar to this one. keep on clicking next, until the setup starts searching for the router. When it is connected it asks you to log in. Usually the default user name is "admin" and the password. Am sure from here you can take it up. Remember Linksys reques atleast 10 digits of your password if you choose WEP encryption. See user guide on setup window for more details. Good luck Vinhaxor

You will need to get to the configuration mode for the router. You can do this from your Desktop. Open your a Internet Browser Window Type in http://192.168.1.1 In the URL This will bring you to the Routers login screen. The factory default username should be 'admin' and 'admin' again for the password. (You should change that password too) Once inside just click aroud the settings to till you find a tap or section called Security. From there just use the interface to eable WEP. This is the security protocol for wirless enviroments. You'll be asked to type in a password and you'll use that gain access to the Internet.

Rather than setup a password, which will require you to enter the password on your laptop every time you log in, why not just restrict the router to only accept connections from your laptop. I know the DLink router I have supports this feature, and I'd be surprised if your LinkSys router didn't also. You'll need to connect all of the wireless devices you want to connect (laptop, game system, etc). Once all the connections are established, you should be able to navigate to the router's control panel (it probably exists at a standard address such as 192.168.0.0 or 192.168.1.1 -- check the documentation). On the control panel, you should be able to find a page that lists all of the MAC addresses that are currently connected. The MAC address is a unique hardware address assigned to every internet-enabled device. You can then configure your router so that ONLY those MAC addresses can ever connect to your network. This will prevent stray users from using your network.

In my opinion the best method is using mac filtering. But before you do that log into your router configurations page from a computer connected directly to the router (wired), you then get all the wireless computers go to start---->run-----> type in cmd and hit enter. Once in the command prompt type ipconfig and look for your wireless adapter mac address or physical address. Do this to each individual wireless pc and write down these mac addresses. You then go back into your router's configuration page from the wired computer and insert the information into the mac filtering page. Mac filtering is really efficient at only allowing wireless access on the computers registered. No one else will be able to tap your wireless connection, actually that's not absolutely true because everything can be cracked or hacked but the person on the other end will really have to know their stuff. Hope this helps...

Log into the router and set a password. That keeps other people from getting into the router. Usually you go to your browser and type 192.168.2.1 but it's a different IP for every manufacturer so check your linksys manual. To stop people from gaining access, enable WEP or MAC address filtering.
