Can ethernet be used for both direct connect and network access?

Cannot connect to home router via ethernet?

  • I used to be able to connect to my router using my ethernet cable which I know for a fact is in good and working condition. The router is able to provide internet for my desktop which also runs Windows 7. However, on my laptop, the connection is recognized but Windows says "Unidentified network, no internet access". All my drivers are up to date and I've even reset my router with no luck. Please don't ask me to roll back drivers as I can't find earlier versions. My computer: Asus G73SW laptop Windows 7 64 Bit My router is a Verizon Fios router Thanks in advance!

Unlikely the drives, so put that on the back burner. You say you have a Desktop that connect OK and a Laptop that does not, both with Ethernet cables. Try switching the cables. If the problem moves with the cables, it's the router or the cable. If the problem moves with the computer, it is a computer setting in your Laptop. If the indication is that the problem lies with the router, plug the cable in a different port ( often there are 4 ports). A webkey is a passphrase in your router, if the router is set up for encryption, but that is only used with wifi. The wifi computer should have the same webkey as the router, for the to connect.

It most likely has something to do with DHCP incorrectly working. I suggest googling how to set a static IP address. If that doesn't work you may have to login to the router remotely and check its settings.Again google can provide guides for this.
