what happens internally in a router when lan is configured?

Network is very slow through a wireless router!?

  • In order to get answers, first i'll answer your questions: 1)What Router Are you talking about? Netgear WGR614 v6. 2)What computers are involved? There are two computers in the LAN. One is a desktop computer (Intel Celeron 1,8Ghz, 512MB DDR400, connected via wire). The other is a laptop (Toshiba M30X-166, Intel Centrino 1,6Ghz, conected via wireless). 3) What's the problem? Lan is supposed to be 54mbps. The speed is around 10mbps when transferring files. 4)What OS are being used? Both have Windows XP SP2. 5) Firewalls? No firewalls enabled. 6) Any program using the lan?? No, the lan is always idle unless i am transferring files. 7) What's the distance between the router and the laptop? It's not about the distance. The same thing happens even when the laptop is NEXT to the router. 8) Does the network have other problems? Yes, i can't ping the computers. 9) Can you see shared folders and files? Yes. Please help! I don't know what more info to provide!

  • Answer:

I have seen this problem many times, and chances are there are one of two issues causing this. #1 You need to verify that you have the latest firmware version on your router. You can download the latest version directly from the manufacturer's website for your particular model. Make sure you check the version number on the sticket on the router before you download. #2 If #1 does not work then make sure that you have an all 802.11G network. If you have even one 802.11b device on your network it can cause all wireless transmissions to then operate at 11Mbps instead of 54Mbps. Especially on older routers.

Pick a spot and run a test.

That is quite normal. Your card is rated at 10/100 if it is newer and up to date drivers. Some of the readings are in bits and some are in bytes and can be really confusing. Run some speed test to both units with www.speakeasy.net. The unit at San Francisco is sometime flaky so use others. That will give true throughput info.

Laid back

You may have a low signal meaning you are far away from the router try going closer.
