How do I share a printer in Mac?

How do I share a printer over a Mac/PC Network?

  • I have my Brother HL-2040 Laser printer hooked up to my Mac Mini. I have a Mac-mac network going, with my PowerBook G4 upstairs. I can't figure out how to get my Windows XP computer to use the same printer. I know it can be done, but I just don't know how... I have the printer set to be shared, I have all sharing things unlocked on my mac. When I go into the preferences on my XP computer to set up the printer, it shows the names of my Mini and my Powerbook in that dropdown screen where you choose the printer you want to use over the network, but it won't drop down and show the printer under the computer name.

  • Answer:

I've had similar problems to this on a windows only network. Instead of choosing to browse for the printer, choose to specify the printer explicitly and type in the name of the shared printer, such as: \\MacMini\PrinterShareName where MacMini is the name of the computer hosting the shared printer and PrinterShareName is the SHARE name of the printer. Worked for me. HTH.
