How To Boost Mobile Internet Speed?

How do I boost my wifi range without breaking the bank OR loosing internet speed?

  • Do I use a repeater? I was just told that a repeater loses half of the wifi speed... I have less than $100 to spend.. Id also like the thing to be completely wireless as I dont want to buy a 50 ft ethernet cable to run throughout my entire house! anyone recommend a product?

  • Answer:

I would give this a try http://www.freeantennas.com/projects/template2/index.html it looks ridiculous but it does work I gained about 30 feet of 4 bar connection. Also I've heard lots of great testimonials.

You don't have to run the cable throughout the house. If you get or convert a wireless router to an AP/Access Point, and connect the AP to your existing wireless router LAN-to-LAN, AND (this is the hard part) install the new AP (with power and the LAN, of course) in a central/convenient in your house that gives good coverage, you will have better wifi range without a repeater. The hard part is always how to fish the CAT 5 to a good spot. You can test (without the cat 5 connect) for a good spot just with the AP, to see what signal strength you get.

In theory wifi is much slower than wired but even more so in practice. Lots of things will mess with and degrade your wireless signal. For best results, and depending on how large an area you want to cover, get 2 or more routers, preferable N but g will work ok, and setup a WDS(Wireless Distribution System). Using one router to repeat another works well but isn't nearly as cool or seamless. If possible places that use 2.4gz wireless devices, microwaves and a lot of wires. Also check out what channel your neighbors wifi is running on and pick a different one to avoid signal degradation. You can pick up a good Linksys N router for less than $70 from a lot of places.

An out of the box Wireless Router always has channels or frequencies to send information to. This is a free way to increase range and speed. 1. Connect to your router. 2. Hit 'Start', then type in 'run' into the search box. 3. When you have found the program Run, type in 'cmd'. 4. A black box with text should appear.Type in 'ipconfig/all', and look for the Default Gateway. 5. Open a web browser and type in your Default Gateway number. 6. Depending on the router, you may need to type in a username and password. Try combinations of 'root' and 'admin'. 7. Go to the 'Settings' or 'Options' tab, and you'll find a box that says 'Channel__ __._GHz' Normally, the channel is set to 11 or 1. 8. Change the channel to something random, like 5 or 7.Not many people will use this channel, so there will be less congestion, therefore speeding up the connection.

I manage a hotel with wifi and the best solution to the problem of wifi range was to get more routers and run cable to the primary router. Repeaters are unreliable, although that antenna idea is intriguing.

You're already losing internet speed on a wireless home network. If you are talking desktop, run the networking cable. You'll be glad you did. Your other options are move the router closer to your PC or get a repeater.
