What's a good but cheap-ish router for gaming?
-
At the moment we have Sky Broadband but have been experiencing problem after problem. We have the internet for the sole purpose of online gaming; two PS3s and one Xbox 360 (soon to be two Xbox 360s and one PS3) but we have the laptop on from time to time. We are looking into changing to Virgin Media and although they provide you with a Virgin Media router anyway, we would prefer one that is better for gaming and on top of that, multiple devices running at the same time. Our only problem is they are quite costly. Are there any routers that are good for this and are reasonably priced?

Answer:
It is all in an add up mostly based on the weakest link. It goes internet service to your home, into a modem, and often then connected to a wireless router/splitter. Wired is stronger than wireless. Items on your network share bandwidth. Wireless speed should match your laptop capability b,g,n, etc. I went decent mid-level with a Belkin N750 DB I have no issue with it at all, but it is certainly not the best Wireless N you can buy. It was on a good sale. http://www.consumersearch.com/wireless-routers http://www.pcmag.com/products/?action=defaultadvancedquery&cid=25412&sid=25412&gridtitle=Recent Product Reviews&googlequery=q%3d%26start%3d0%26n… http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=sr_nr_scat_300189_ln?rh=n%3A300189%2Ck%3Awireless+N+routers&keywords=wireless+N+routers&ie=UTF8&qid=1331403877&scn=300189&h=efeb610a1712742235087f03f2bade70e2592fdc#/ref=sr_st?bbn=300189&keywords=wireless+N+routers&qid=1331403898&rh=i%3Acomputers%2Cn%3A172282%2Cn%3A!493964%2Cn%3A541966%2Cn%3A172504%2Cn%3A300189%2Ck%3Awireless+N+routers%2Cp_72%3A1248879011&sort=reviewrank_authority There is single band and dual band. That has to do with the frequencies. It does get into your price point and the wireless laptop and whether you are trying to go wireless in your gaming systems. Adding: You entered this on US Y/A. The wireless routers are the same, but you have VAT added and sometimes duties so all prices higher. Availability also. Will check a couple UK Looking for a dual band wireless N with a gigabit switcher which would be ideal. E2000 £56 to 60 seems to be well rated dual band with ports in the back that appear to be gigabit at a relatively low end price on a dual band wireless N http://www.amazon.co.uk/Linksys-E2000-Advanced-Wireless-N-Router/dp/B003B20F54/ref=sr_1_2?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1331405662&sr=1-2 With a $100 US retail, if trying to budget low priced, it is pretty good http://homestore.cisco.com/en-us.htm/en-us/Routers/Linksys-E2000-Advanced-Wirelessn-router_stcVVproductId97826161VVcatId551966VVviewprod.htm?sourceid=SEM_A1_US_G_LOW-TOP-PERFORMERS_LINKSYS-PRODUCT--CORE_%5Blinksys-e2000%5D_exact&gclid=CL-7yYCC3a4CFQcFRQodTBjqWw Does not include the modem. Verify cable modem or DSL phone line modem Otherwise you need modem-router-switcher in dual band wireless N gigabit switching I think you have to use one of their modems. Their "Superhub" modem-router is only a single band wireless N so is inferior to the dual bands. Whatever router you get from them, can add the dual band wireless. There are a few more available at appx the same price. A cheaper one is manually switched between frequencies. Dual band both running broadcasts at two frequencies essentially setting up a double strength network for reception. Wireless N gets the speed. E2000 is not bad, unless you want to spend more for better.

Most routers are $50-60 range, but I'd reccomend NetGear, It's fast and efficient.
