Cable modem stopped working.... won't work with ethernet, only with USB...?

Yesterday, I couldn't get on the internet. I had the cable light, and the power light. The PC light was not on, so I tried replacing the ethernet cable. Didn't work. I bought a new cable modem. Still didn't work with new modem/new ethernet. Hooked it up through the USB connection- that works!! So what's up with my ethernet? Is there something wrong with my computer? How do I fix it? I bought this computer in May. It's an HP Compaq.

Answer:
you have to reinstall the software for the cable modem for the ethernet jack, right now its set up for usb. you should have the cd and instructions on how to change it.
