Wireless internet adapter for Linux?

Can't find my Ubuntu Linux wireless key?

  • I installed Ubuntu once again on my (used-to-be) dad's friend's laptop the other day. I forgot and didn't realize that the wireless needs to be configured first. BTW, this is a Dell Laptop with an Intel Corporation PRO/Wireless LAN 2100 3B Mini PCI Adapter. I don't know anything about the security key or where to find it. When I ran Ubuntu on this computer months ago, I didn't have this problem, the software automatically recognized the DSL device. Now that I don't have internet on my laptop, Ubuntu Linux (unless you don't plan on installing anything) is completely useless. My memory of how to use Linux is fuzzy, as I haven't used it in a few months.

I agree that the key is stored in the router configuration. To access the router configuration, plug the laptop into the router via ethernet cable. Then, you need to find your router's IP address. It should be shown to you in your network settings; quite possibly 192.168.1.1. Go to this IP address in your web browser, and log into the router with your username and password (or the default if you never set one; often admin/admin but ask google). Once you're in, navigate to the section for wireless security, and there's your key.

I assume the key you mentioned refer to the wireless WEP key. That is not store in the OS. It is configure in the router. Can you "see" the wireless network at all? You have an option to configure in the router if it broadcast its name. If you do not broadcast, you will need to know the wireless network name to configure it. The WEP key will be needed for you to connect to the wireless network. Check with the guy who setup your router.
