How to build a public DNS server?

Windows Server 2003 DNS Setup.. HELP!?

  • I have a client who needs DNS setup. They are running their internet through a DSL router/modem. One of the machines on the network (there are only 3, plus the server) takes a very long time to login to the domain with issues such as the taskbar taking 5 mins to load before you can actually click Start, ect. I figured turning the DC into a DNS Server would make the login times to the network a lot faster. To setup the server as a DNS server and still have all PC's be able to access the internet, I know I need to know which IP Address is used for the ISP DNS Servers, but I am not sure where to enter that under the DNS configuration in Windows Server 2003. I can get into the config, but am a little cloudy when trying to figure out where to enter this information so that all clients behind the server can access the internet. Also i would just have to point the client machines to the Windows 2003 Server for their DNS after this right? Any help would be appreciated, especially step by step... Thanks!

I just want to clear some doubts about your question. 1) If you have a windows domain, there must be a DNS server. It may be an Active directory integrated DNS or a Stand Alone DNS. So check all servers wheather they have DNS. 2) If all the other servers dont have any issue with logging in, then how can you say that this issue will be solved by configuring an additional DNS. 3) No need for a confusion about the IP used for DNS. It must be a priviate IP not the IP of the ISP. The DNS inside your lan is used for resolving your local addresses. The DNS address specified in the ethernet card of the ISP is for resolving the website addrsses to ips while browsing. I dont think that placing a DNS will solve the issue. Check the DNS address entered in the Problamatic Server. If that entry is wrong, it may cause a delay. Check wheather any service is causing any errors in startup. Any help, just shout. Shaba!

If you truly want to set up the Windows 2003 Server as a DNS server then you would want to make the ISP DNS servers FORWARDERS on the Windows server. I question weather you really need to do this since two of your three machines are booting properly. I would take a step back and look at the situation, is there a bad cable between the slow machine and the switch, router, hub, etc? Switch cables with a working machine and change the port it is using. Is it using wireless and is actually attaching to another company? If all of that looks OK, take it off the network and reboot in safe mode and use several spyware scanners to determine if that might be an issue. Next, try a couple of smaller antivirus engines that can be run from a USB drive or a copied folder rather than being installed. IF you do want to configure the DNS forwarder, the link in the answers section takes you to a good knowledge base article on doing just that. IF this is on a SmallBusinessServer 2003 there could be other things completely, ISA for instance, that could be causing problems. Please let me know if this answers your question or if I could explain something better. Good Luck!

Check with your friends their computer address's and numbers + their internet connections, which might also help. If its like dialup, you should tick the automactically detect settings button if not then, ring someone up, get them in to help you - by doing that it takes a long time plus with about 10 phone calls to get it right.
