What's wrong with my wireless connection?

  • My internet connection only stays up for about 2-5 minutes at a time, and then it terminates. I constantly have to click the repair button so it'll reset. If I'm not running webpages it will usually stay connected, but say I run an internet facebook game it will only stay connected for about a minute and I have to reset it. But even when I am running something without java or flash etc (something like yahoo answers) it will take forever to load, or just not at all. The message tells me the network did not assign my computer an address. I use an eMachine running windows xp. I use a Belkin wireless USB that connects to a router about 5 feet from my computer in the next room. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    Why wireless 5 ft away? is it a laptop, if so why no wireless card.....desktop ? why not just use an ethernet cable?maybe you dont have the proper driver for the usb connector.

Is this a desktop? If so are you using a USB extension lead to connect the wireless card? If it is directly plugged in at the back or front of the machine it is in a very bad location, as it is close to the metal casing of the machine, this loses wireless signal. Better is to mount it above the desk and clear of all obstructions. The same rule applies to the router, it should be mounted as high as possible and clear of obstructions, and not to close to any wall, metal objects or electrical equipment as all of these can reduce signal. Also you might try changing the router channel as a nearby router using the same channel (especially if it is set at default) will cause conflicting signals.
