How do I share large files?

How to set up lan to share files from vista laptop to xp computer?

  • i have large video files on my laptop that i would like to send to my older computer because my computer has a dvd burner so i can either burn these video's or keep them on there and watch them through my tv/monitor. I use wireless internet from my aunt since i live in a guest house in the back so i don't have a direct internet connection from there to here. I do however have a linksys wireless g router that i connected my computer too and would like to either connect to it wirelessly or through an ethernet cord (wireless is preferable but either way works) i got this router from my cousin so i don't have the software. My question is: how do i set up a lan so i can share files between the two. my laptop runs vista and computer runs xp. will internet be necessary? I cannot hook the router up to it. if there's file's/software i need to install on my computer i can put it on my usb drive but my dilema is sending large video files

Dear vihuelaplayer, I have attempted to resolve your problem: 1) If your prime motive is to watch the video files, then you can also connect the TV or monitor to the laptop, via VGA port or S-Video output jack. (The VGA port has 15 little pin-slots in three rows of five each. The S-Video jack is small and round and has 7 pin slots and a slightly bigger slot below.) Thus, you'll be able to watch the videos without having to transfer them to the older computer. 2) Or you can setup a wireles connection as follows: -connect your PC with your wireless router. -Go to 'Network and Sharing Center' from your control panel in your Laptop. -click 'set up a connection or a network' from the list on the left side. -click 'set up a wireless ad-hoc (computer to computer connection)' -give any name and password you want and turn on wireless. -See if they get connected, then right click on the folder containing your videos in your laptop. Select 'properties', go to sharing tab. -Click on 'Share' and select 'Everyone' in the dropdown list. If the above method doesn't work, then there's another way as follows: 2) You can use LAN as follows. It is very simple: - You must verify that you have a LAN card on your laptop and PC. - Go to any computer hardware shop and ask for a CROSS LAN cable. (Ask for Cross cable, and NOT Straight cable.) - Now insert one LAN pin of the cable into the PC and the other into the laptop. - Right click on the LAN icon on the taskbar of your Vista laptop, and go to network and sharing center. - On the left bar, click on 'Manage Network connections'. - Find Local Area Connections, right click on it and click 'Properties'. - Click on 'Internet Protocol v4.0 (TCP/IPv4)' in it. Below, click on 'Properties' again. - Enter 195.222.123.2 as IP address, 255.255.255.0 as Subnet mask, 111.111.111.111 as Default gateway. -Similarly, enter IP address 195.222.123.1 in your XP PC, 255.255.255.0 subnet mask, 111.111.111.111 as default gateway. -Next, you have to right click on the folder containing your videos in your laptop. Select 'properties', go to sharing tab. -Click on 'Share' and select 'Everyone' in the dropdown list.
