How do I become a network administrator?

What is the best way to "break in" to IT if my goal is to become Network Administrator?

  • Hi Gurus, what's the best way to go about this.. (Assuming I have an Associate's) Do I need to start at the very bottom with A+, Technician, then Network+, with Help Desk, then work my way into the Network Administration with CCNA? Or can I just get my Network+ and CCNA through Cisco Academy and jump in as a Jr. Network Admin?

  • Answer:

This field is becoming very very competitive and there are so many kids out there that think they are the next IT guru , I cant even begin to tell you how many resumes I see each week come over my desk , some with every certification on the planet only too see these people fail , Education is great certifications are also great but nothing NOTHING beats experience , my chief tech is making over 77K a year and has never set foot in a class room he is 100% self taught and knows more then most 4 year college kids

even with education, for me you cant beat experience.. even starting at a level one or two Help desk can really help you in experience.. which will definitly help you in troubleshooting issues if you work as a network engineer later on. just jumping right into a more advanced position like a network engineer might not be the best idea since those types of positions require some type of knowledge of different areas.
