Is there any way to connect a laptop to a Comcast cable box?

Comcast High Speed internet and wireless box problems?

  • So I have had Comcast high speed cable internet for about 6 months now, recently I just bought a dell xps laptop with a wireless card in it and I want to be able to use the internet on my laptop so I bought a Wireless Router - the Linksys WRT54GS, the problem I am having is that I completely install the router and get it all connected the way it says to connect - Comcast internet box to router- router to computer and it installs but then it says it cannot find a internet connection or that a cable is unplugged, and then my interent will not work at all. But if I connect my internet straight to my computer it works perfectly. At first I thought maybe its the wireless box but I returned it and got a new one and am still having the same problems. I am really confused and dont know exactly what to do, any advice would be appreciated.

Try this before calling Comcast Comcast uses the MAC ID of your computer to control and assign Internet IP addresses. If they do not see the MAC ID they expect they do not give you an IP address. Your router blocks your MAC ID, so that's why when you put it in line, you can't connect. Go into your router setup and select "clone MAC ID" It makes all the difference PS - I've used cable internet for better than 15 years. In that time I've been down lees than 3 days. It's the fastest service you can get for residential use and Comcast is at least a real ISP, unlike some services like Verizon, who hand you off to a 3rd party

there is a particular sequence. be sure to install the router and the proper wireless drivers on your computer before you turn anything on. Then power up your cable modem and let it get completely up to speed (ie. all the lights are on and it's online). Then plug in your router. Restart your computer and see if it finds your network. It could be that things are out of sync. Routers and cable modems only like it when things are done in that order, as it has been my experience. Hope this helps.

No Clue

I have had the same problem with several Linksys routers. Honestly, I think they suck. I don't have problems with any other router. Good luck with Linksys customer service. Having worked in call centers for the past 7 years, I tend to be very critical of customer service. However, Linksys not only has the worst routers I've ever used, but the very worst customer service. I used to live a few blocks from the Linksys call center when I lived in the Philippines and, trust me, most of the workers do not speak English well. They are just going to read a script to you. If you try to talk about something that is not on their script, they won't know what you're talking about. lol

Well, you really are in a rut because Comcast is UNRELIABLE. Just go to Best Buy and they'll fix whatever your prob is, but try not to go to "big word" on them because they'll get as confused w/ your techno problem as me.

You have to go into the router setup and tell it to connect to the internet. You will need your username and password for internet. Then after it is setup tell your laptop to connect to the router.

Comcast is shitty, sorry you have to deal with it. I would call the Linksys customer service, when I lived in Boston and had to set up my wireless, we had to call them and have them talk us through it, way easier than trying to figure it out yourself.

GO TO THE LINKSYS WEB SITE TO DOWN LOAD THE PROGRAM (FIRMWARE) FOR YOU WRTGS. THEN YOU NEED TO MAKE SURE YOUR SECURITY PROGRAM IS NOT BLOCKING. THATS AS FAR AS I GOT SO GOOD LUCK.

I would connect to the router with a wire and go into the router (via your web browser) and make sure that wireless is enabled, and set up the security. You'll have to click around a bit ti find the wireless setting. To get into the router, type 192.168.1.1 into the URL address bar, hit Enter. You'll see a login window, leave the username blank and type: admin for the password (and CHANGE that password). You can get help with a linksys router here: http://www.linksys.com/servlet/Satellite?c=L_Promotion_C2&childpagename=US%2FLayout&cid=1121874562335&pagename=Linksys%2FCommon%2FVisitorWrapper&lid=6233562335B12 If the wireless is set up, there may be a firewall issue on the laptop. A program I like to use (on a laptop) to find wireless access is Netstumbler: http://www.netstumbler.com/
