How can I share a printer with 2 computers?

I've got 4 computers, how can we set these 4 to share 1 printer?

  • Anybody who knows the detailed procedure for setting these 4 computers (laptop and desktop) to share 1 printer only? Is this possible?

  • Answer:

There are actually two ways. One of them is to have a router that also serves as a print server for your USB printer. That way any computer can use the printer at any time. The other method that the earlier posters referred to is a bit different. the printer must be plugged into one of the computers in your network. If you haven't already set up a network then you should first run the network setup wizard on all your computers. Make sure they are all members of the same workgroup BEFORE you run the setup wizard. Once that is complete go into printers and faxes on the computer that the printer is attached to. You can get to it through either the start menu or the control panel. Right click the printer you wish to network and click the little box to share the printer. Then, on each computer that is connect to the network you need to go into printers and faxes and add a printer. Choose to add a networked/shared printer. Then you need to navigate to the computer the printer is attached to. After that you should be good to go. Note, if the printer is attached to a computer and not to a router that means that your other computers will only have access to the printer while the attached machine is on. With a router/print server that is not an issue.

You have to set up a network between your computers and printer. Most computer have a help guide for setting up a network. Call your internet provider or computer company for help. I had a friend to set mine up, I can print from my laptop to my printer that is connected to my desktop.

It's possible. You would have to go to whatever computer has it and share it in control panel. Open up printers and right click on your printer's icon, then go to the "sharing" tab.

If the computers are already networked together, then you can set it up. Open the printers icon and then right click on the printer. Select properties and then sharing. Name the Printer what you would like to call it and hit okay. On each of the other PC's, go to add a printer and seach for it. Make sure that each PC is in the same Workgroup and you should be good to go.

If the printer is connected to one computer, and your computers are networked, see Mik's answer above. One drawback to this approach is that the computer to which the printer is connected must be powered on any time anyone wants to print from any computer in the network. Another alternative is to install a print server device. These devices are commonly available from network hardware vendors such as Linksys, D-Link, and Netgear, and they generally are priced between $25.00 and $75.00. Typically, the print server device will have a USB port to which you connect the printer and an Ethernet port to connect to your network hub or switch.

hi there I see a number of good ideas above. One thing that no one mentions is that SOME printers - and I have a few, require that you install the shared printer DRIVERS from the CD that came with the printer - this only applies to certain printers, usually with parallel connections, but do be aware that not all printers will work just by clicking on " PRINTER AND FILE SHARING" or similar button in the Control panel.. You likely will be able to share any new USB printer, since it has all the settings pre-configured for sharing in the original set up. good luck

There is two way to shares one printer among 4 computers. NETWORK Go to Start and Printers and Faxs. If you can't find it then it located in the Control Panel. Then, click on ADD PRINTER and click on Next to start the Wizard process. Click on the bubble circle next to A Network Printers.... then Browse for a computer. Double click each Parent host and sub-host to bring down a listed printer. Click on your printer and click Next. Non-Network You need a Data Switch box that contains 4 out coming ports and 1 incoming port using printer cable. You need at least 1 printer cable and 4 Male to Male type printer cable. Once your acquire what you order then the rest is self-explainatory. You only need the same skill as you were plugging the printer cable between computer and printer.

First you need to set all 4 pc on lan network Once you are done, you will need to install the printer on any one pc and then click on start and printers and faxes. Right click your printer and click on sharing then click on share this printer and type in a very easy name for your printer like "HP" then click ok. Now go on the other pc and click on start - printer and faxes and then add a printer. select a network printer then click next and select browse then next and then select your printer on the network. once its installed do check in start - printers and faxes if you have the printer there. try to print a test page to check if its working. Thats it ;-)
