I have a cable modem in my office and would like to install cable modem in my basement.?

I have a cable modem in my office and would like to install cable modem in my basement. I have purchased a second cable modem. Can I connect the second modem in the basement and attach it to existing cable outlet in the basement and receive internet service? Or does the cable company have to setup in order for me to receive service in the basement? Does this mean I will receive an additional charge for this service? It seems that if I am already paying for the service, I should be able to receive service in basement with additional modem. I have tried using wireless router but service is not received in basement.

Answer:
you can not have more then on hooked up to the same line best bet is to put on a router from the cable modem to touter and then to where ever in the house you want can also try wireless router but then you will need a wireless card in all pc connecting them

try connecting to exsisting cable out let since wireless router does,t work. If this doesn,'t work you'll have to call your cable network

Why not a wired router???? all a modem does is change the coaxial cable into a ethernet cable. You need the cable copany to set up another line and then you pay double. feel free to email me at [email protected]

How about using Powerline Ethernet Adapter? http://catalog.belkin.com/IWCatSectionView.process?Section_Id=201539

You should not use two cable modems. The modem brings the signal into the house and you get charged for each one. You can very simply install a router which will address lots of other computers in your house. The one way is with Ethernet cables. If running a cable is difficult, simply buy a wireless router. If the computer in the basement does not have wireless capability you will also need a wireless card.

using another modem will result in an additional charge for the modem each month from your cable provider, the wifi will not work from floor to floor if you are in the basement, there is too much stuff in the way, you will need to have a CAT 5 wire run from your router, to the basement, where you can connect directly to your pc, or connect to another router even a wifi that will work in the basement.. if you live in 718/212 i run cat 5 for 75 per wire run [email protected]

As for the wireless router, I too had problems until I got a Linksys USB port antenna. As for your Cable, Just go to radio shack and buy a splitter and run the wires in the wall, outside or however you're gonna do it. The cable company doesn't charge xtra for that and you didn't need to buy another box. You just use your 1 box, get a cable with 2 heads on it connect one to your box, put another cable on the other end of the split and plug it into your other TV.

Just drill a hole through your floor, and connect both your modems together with an ethernet cable, and for the additional fee i think it depends what kind of service you have(for example cablevision)
