How much does WiMAX cost?

Hardware recommendations for point to point WiMax?

  • A little detail on the situation...I live in the UK, but the area where I live has no current plans for BT Infinity to be installed, certainly not in the next 3 years anyway. My colleague lives in an area where it is available and he has got it. We would like to use a WiMax connection so that my house can use his internet connection. The line-of-sight distance between our houses is 2.75 miles, there are obstructions so a laser link is not suitable but the land is reasonably flat with no hills or valleys. Can anyone recommend some suitable hardware and antennas and how much it would be likely to cost? Looking for the lowest cost option really. His internet connection is 40meg and I would be happy to get 20meg on the receiving end of the link but if it's possible to get faster then even better. Or is there a better solution than WiMax?

  • Answer:

Check Ubiquity. They have many radio link products, and with mostly line of sight, you should be able to get the link you want. Expect to spend a couple hundred pounds (British) on it. There should be some UK distributors for these, I would assume. Worst case, you would have to use a 900Mhz link (near line of sight), but those top out at maybe 4 to 6mbps (still worth it if you need it)
