Can i wire my laptop to my stereo speakers?
-
I wanted to find a cable that will enable me to play music from my laptop and through my normal stereo speakers, is that possible if so what type of cable would i need to wire it up??
-
Answer:
Coincidentally I was just trying to do the same thing. I used one of those cables that either came with my laptop or camera - I am told it is a video/audio cable or something or other. Has red and/or yellow plugs. The big ones fit in to the aux sockets at the back of your stereo and the headphone plug fits into your computer headphone socket. Check you dont already have the cable before going and buying one.

Mini d to RCA but what I would suggest is go to radio shack and purchase a ground isolator and mini d adapter. This way it will remove the noise from the computer and the cable is included. Notebook Speaker out jack (mini D connection male) to RCA LINE IN or TAPE IN (RCA MALE)

Get a patch cable to your stereo's aux input, slight voltage mismatch. Most computer sound card dont come with a lineout jack for home stereos.

yes just plug them into your head phone socket

If they run off an amp or receiver then plug the 1/8" audio cable to the AUX input of the receiver/amp. You might need an adapter to go from 1/8" to 1/4", or buy a cable with those two plugs. If they are powered speakers you can use a cable with 1/8" plugs on both ends.

Yes, i've seen it done, but have no idea how to do it

If you wanted to hook them up directly to speakers from the headphone jack it would be possible but you wouldn't get much volume out of them. better to hook up through an amplifier.. but anyway, first of all you need to know what kind of connectors hook up to your speakers. If it's just bare wire, then you could probably buy some length of speaker wire at radio shack, and a stereo headphone plug. If you're not handy with a solder iron mabee buy something with a headphone jack and hock off the other end of the connector to form bare wire to connect to your speakers... anyway, next:

I am sure you can easily ask people at the store and they can help you find adapter/cable to connect. Question is sound might not work well as you would be expected if built in amplifier of sound out from your laptop is weak or no good.(I am presuming that you are connecting the cable directly out of notebook to speakers), but if you have built in amplifier within speakers, you should be okay.(powered, etc.)

If they are speakers you normally plug in a desktop computer with built in amplifier - just plug them in the headphone socket of your laptop. Otherwise you need to plug a sound output from your laptop in to a amplifier - maybe your stereo. Probably headphone socket to line in would be the easiest.
