How to reconnect to Ethernet interface on Linux computer?

Linux and network routing.?

  • I currently have cable modem connected to a router, and several computers connected to the router. The router and clients are set up to use DHCP. My question is, computer X is connected to the internet through the router on its main ethernet interface, eth0. How do I configure computer X's second ethernet interface eth1, to communicate with computer Y, so computer Y may also have internet access. Running Slackware 10.2 on computer X, Fedora Core 4 on computer Y. I am still doing research, but am having a hard time finding relevent results.

  • Answer:

Not sure why you want to do that. Isn't it easier to let computer Y get internet access directly from the router? But if you insist to do it, first of all you must run in.routed on computer X, then configure eth1 using nonpublic network number, something like 192.168.0.0 or 10.0.0.0. Say let X have 10.10.10.1 and Y have 10.10.10.2 and you must set the default router on Y to use 10.10.10.1. The routed will let X to behave as a route for Y. I wouldn't recommend this setup, unless you are trying to setup X as a firewall or a content filter for computer Y. Have fun!
