What does the daily routine of a Network Administrator consist of?

• Could an experienced network administrator please answer the following, the data will be used for a research paper. 1. Is your network using Ethernet? 2. What transmission speed does your network use? 3. What type of backbone does your network use? 4. What type of wiring is used for the Backbone and workstations ? 5. Do you use WAN technologies? 6. If you all the money you wanted in your budget, what upgrades would you make? 7. If you had money enough for only one upgrade, what would it be?

  1. Most networks use Ethernet these days. Wireless is the other popular option. 2. Common Networks use 100Mbps (MegaBits per second), however, on installs that I do now for small business, Gigabit (1000Mbps) is the norm. 3. Networks are based on Windows 2003 Server, or current installs are Windows 2008 Server. 4. Networks commonly use RJ45 connectors on Ethernet Category 5 (CAT5) cables, however with Gigabit Ethernet, we now use Category 5 Enhanced, (CAT5e) cables. 5. Yes, a WAN router, (Hardware Firewall), is attached to a ADSL or Cable Modem then fed into the network. 6. I'd build a Super powerfull computer (like a gaming computer) with Gigabit ethernet and at least 8Gigs of RAM and four 500Gig Hard Disks, and install Windows Server 2008. For electricity it would be attached to an APC brand UPS (Uninteruptible Power Supply), and APC Power remote access power bar. Attach that to a 24port Gigabit Ethernet Switch and build between four and 200 workstations to work from it. Oh and all the Cat 5e cables to connect all this together. 7. If I had less than ten computers, I'd get a quad core CPU system. If I had more than ten, I'd get the 24 port Gigabit Ethernet switch with Cat5e cables. Cheers. I hope this is helpfull.
