How is static IP address advantageous over the dynamic IP address? What are the benefits of static IP address?

    IP address is the identity of a network device or of an application ( like web server, transaction server, media server). And organisation need to pay to IP address allocation authority ( for example APNIC for Asian regions) for using a specific block of Ip address. Now why we need public IP address - To become visible and accessible to and from Internet. Most of the ISPs uses Dynamic Address pool to assign Ip address to customers - These save their IP ( for example is there is 200 hundred customer listed, they may use a pool which contains 100 addresses, considering there will be no more than 100 customer at any particular point of time, saving 100 address.) Now what is the advantages to Permanent or Static Ip address - you will be having a unique identity (hence can announce yourself to Internet and people can access you - say for example you are running a web server from where people will see your website, you may be running a file server from where your clients are downloading or uploading critical data) In a single line - you need static IP only when you need to be permanently visible to Internet. Note - there is a cost implication here as already said IP address is not free, you ISP will charge you for this or you may have to pay APNIC / IANA for obtaining IP address space.

In short, you'd only benefit from a static IP if you were running some sort of server, be it for games or files, that you wanted to always be at the same address so that people could find it easily. Note that there are free services which help you maintain a permanent address even with a dynamic IP. Check out http://www.no-ip.com

This would be for the router setups, network setups, proxy setups, etc...Also security on the servers can be setup for the DMZ zones using the IP address. Internally to the company this means nothing but for the LAN administrators having one static IP make configuration, security, and setup a whole lot easier.

well. the dynamic ip address is actually assigned in your system only when u r going to connect ur system with wan connection. but ur isp will have unique static ip address to be connect to the wan connection and all. if u wana identification among external network for ur system to be access by the another person. u would have to get static ip from isp and have to configure it in ur system. (nd also will have to install firewall to restrict anonymous access) if u wana install any web server or exchange server and u can make publish it to the external network through an static ip that u have get from isp if u may install as primary ip for ur network. thanks

If you wold like to run OWA, a web server, or point any internal service "externally" to the web ~ you need a static IP. Its like your phone number that is listed in the phone book. With a dynamic IP you have to give your # out to anyone that needs to connect since it changes all of the time. With a static you can register it and have DNS records point your URL to your IP.
