What is the best and fastest Powerline Ethernet Adapter available?

Powerline Ethernet Adapter Kit for Xbox 360?

  • Well I'm still searching for a method of connecting my Xbox 360 to the internet without the use of wireless, a new modem, or a 50 foot cable running my basement, and these so called " Powerline Ethernet Adapters " look like a dream come true, since I've read they can give you internet ANYWHERE in your house where there's a Power Outlet and you have an Ethernet Cable ( I have about 25 ). So, I've picked an example for you: http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=10104838 This one is a BIT expensive, I'm looking for about 80$ Canadian, but if I have to I'll buy for 110$. Now, what I want to know is if this will work, if I plug one into my Outlet near my Computer, and plug a Cable going from my Router into it, and then, plug another one in the outlet near my Xbox 360, and connect to my 360 with the cable that came with it, would this work? Could anyone suggest a great Powerline Ethernet Adapter Kit ( 2 units together ) for me? Looking for something with speeds of around 85 - 100 MBPS, good quality, no breaking issues, etc. Thanks. AND NO I DON'T WANT WIRELESS, STOP SUGGESTING IT.

  • Answer:

I have two of the early D-Link powerline adapters - back when they were only rated for 6Mbps and those work extremely well in my house - we have 2.4GHz phones so wifi is awful and these really are like a dream come true...trust me... A WORD OF WARNING: Some of these only include 1 adapter, make sure you're really getting a kit with 2 adapters in it...otherwise you have to buy two of them which costs a lot more. I think mine were about $150-200 when I got done, between the 2 adapters (they didn't make a kit) and longer network cables to reach from the outlets to my computers. So far, mine haven't had any issues...I've found they work best plugged in the same orientation (box facing up or box facing down) and avoid using surge-protectors, power-conditioners, or putting transformers (wall worts) near them. If you can keep them on the same "phase" (breakers/fuses in the same box and on the same side) they work better but mine work fairly well as long as they're on breakers/fuses the same circuit box. I have had good luck using extension cords with mine to keep them away from other stuff (which helps a little) but they get HOT so don't put them on unprotected carpet or something like that...I got a couple scrap tiles (small ceremic tile left over from a flooring installer) that I use like a "hot plate" and that works well. They're very expensive, but worth it. I'd AVOID WalMart, I've been burned by the return/exchange policy (long story...they didn't want to exchange a defective digital camera I got earlier in the day because the box was opened). CircuitCity, BestBuy, Staples, or Office Depot are much better for electronics and don't ask any questions when you want a simple exchange for defective goods. If you don't mind internet purchases, look at PriceGrabber, ResellerRatings, and Nextag to search for the cheapest price...once you decide what model number, just search for that at one of those sites. I recommend the ResellerRatings.com one, they let buyers rate the stores as to how good/bad the service and such is.
