What kind of RAM do I need for a white MacBook?

What kind of RAM do I need for this computer?

  • I purchased an eMachines computer that came with 512 megs of the following type of RAM: 512MB DDR2 Memory, Dual-Channel Capable (1 × 512MB), 533MHz (PC4200) There are two slots total. I had two questions: I'm assuming I need to purchase PC4200 RAM, correct? Also, can I put a 1-gig RAM card in the second slot, or do I have to add the RAM evenly to the slots (meaning that I'd either have to have two 512-meg cards or two 1-gig cards)?

  • Answer:

Yes you are right. You can put in a stick of 512 or 1gig of ram in the second slot..

First, yes you are correct in that you need to buy DDR2 533 (pc4200). In regaurds to your second question this is motherboard specefic however the vast majority of modern desktop pcs are able to take diffrent capacity RAM in each slot however your ram is Dual-Channel Capable. In order recive the benifits of your dual channel RAM the RAM chips must be identical and of the same capacity. Dual-Channeling your RAM can drasticly increase RAM proformance however I belive that it would be better to add another gig of RAM rather then buy another two chips or an identical 512mb ram chip.

ok well it all depends what your desktop will support and it should say in the manual how much it can support and also if ull be able to replace the original 512 stick
