Why don't my surround sound speakers work?

PC surround sound?

  • i use 7.1 surround sound in windows XP and all the speakers work. but then i did a clean install with windows vista ultimate X64 but only 2 work. when i configure the speakers, (and you have to click on the speakers to check if they are working), all speakers work.... but when playing a song or anything else, they dont all work together... how do i change it... ive done configuring and set it to 7.1 sound, but they dont work...

    I would go into sound and audio in the control panel and go to volume tab, click on the advanced options and make certain the format you desire is selected. If that doesn't help, start looking for an updated driver at MS Support.

your issue is that vista does not support speaker fill what i would recommend is getting winamp (even an older version i recommend 2.95) to play music and on their site they have a surround sound plug in, its what i use and i think it sounds better than anything else ive used when it comes to playing music

Yet another think in Vista that doesn't work. Check your sound card settings for compatability issues.

Vista has a tendency to break a lot of things. It is most likely a problem with your drivers in which case finding the proper drivers will fix it. A driver is kind of like an instruction manual that the operating system (vista) uses to know how to interact with the sound card. To find the proper drivers (if they exist) you'll want to figure out who the manufacturer of your sound card is and then go to their website and look for somewhere to download drivers for vista. Its kind of like if you were to guy buy a new DVD player. You can open it and pop in a DVD and watch it, but you're not going to know how to use all the advanced features until you read the directions. Your computer knows how to use a basic sound card, but it can't use all of the surround sound options until it gets a proper manual (driver).
