Can I use my computer's hard drive in my ps3?

Can I use my SimpleTech External Hard Drive cable to charge a PS3 Controller?

  • Due to a misplacement of the cable that comes with a PS3 to charge the controller, I'm looking for an alternative method. I own a SimpleTech External Hard Drive, which uses a similar cable. The end of the cable that connects to the Hard Drive is the same size of the one that connects to the Controller, but My Hard Drive needs two USB ports to function, so the cord has one more USB port connection than the one that came with the PS3. (like in this picture http://aphnetworks.com/review/simpletech_portable_pininfarina/003.JPG ). Can I connect the controller and the PS3 with this cable if only one of the two USB ports are connected? If not, will the controller or the PS3 be damaged by plugging both USB ends in (so all three ends of the cord will be connected)?

  • Answer:

It should work with one port anyways. The reason why there's two USB ends is because some laptops could not supply enough power to the hard drive with just one port. If I recall, one connector is data plus power (like a normal cable) and the other is just a dummy connector only used to bring additional power. Either one should charge the controller. Honestly, I've never tried both. --- Any USB 2.0 A/Male to Mini B/male cable will work on a PS3 controller. Like this one http://www.usb-ware.com/usb-type-a-mini-b-cable.htm
