Where can I get a good laptop?

Where can I get a good, inexpensive laptop/computer?

  • question: Where should I look? details: I want a computer for myself for school and other stuff. My budget is $250.00 maximum(which rules out a mac). I want a good processor, lots of RAM memory, a decent amount of storage space on a hard drive, and a decent graphics card because I will be likely be making OpenGL stuff on it. I do not care how big the monitor is. I will likely install Ubuntu on it, but I don't care if it has Windows pre-installed on it. The last requirement is that I want it for the next minimal 2 and a half years, but possibly for the next 5. I don't care if it is a laptop or a desktop, as long as it is good quality. Where should I look?

  • Answer:

Newegg has laptops/desktops/netbooks for $250 and under, but unfortunately you're probably not gonna get much performance out of them considering the work you'll be doing. You get what you pay for. The best I could find is this (doesn't come with monitor): http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16883147337 ($224.99) Core 2 Duo 1.83 GHz (C2Ds are good processors) 2 GB RAM (upgradeable to 4GB RAM) 80 GB hard drive (decent, but you might want more) Integrated Graphics (you will want to upgrade this later) You can buy for now, and upgrade the RAM, hard drive and graphics later.
