What is the average lifespan of a hard disk?

Does antivirus reduce lifespan of hard disk by scanning it continuously, putting load etc.? Should i use it?

  • Answer:

You should always use an antivirus package, no exceptions. That even includes smart phones and the like. Yes, it'll reduce the lifespan of any component connected to the system, because it increases system load. However, it'll also help you defend against threats - so if you're going to do anything more than, oh, use a computer as a paperweight, the (negligible) loss of lifespan isn't even worth comparing against the increased system security.

Your hard drive bears enough wear and tear from regular usage; running a virus scan isn't gonna do it any measurable harm at all. In fact, I'd highly suggest you get one to prevent viruses/spyware/etc from stealing/corrupting your information and slowing down your computer.

Of course it wont. A scan is no more than it working normally!

my answer i agree with the top statement you should always use anti-virus but what i suggest is if you can convert from i'm guessing windows or mac i would covert to Linux Ubuntu because it actually runs your hard drive slower and you don't need anti-virus i have had my computer since 2007 and never ran a single anti-virus on it and never had any trouble out of it (for the experienced computer user) hope this helps

generally antivirus don't continually scan the hard drive, they scan created/changed/accessed files and only do a scheduled scan at regular intervals. it may reduce the lifespan but not to such a level that its worth bothering about, its no more taxing than the continual load on the rive through normal usage. It is highly advisable to use an antivirus of some kind.

No. it does not reduce the lifespan. and no you should not use an anti-virus you should just let your computer get infected with viruses THAT will shorten the lifespan of your hard disk (sarcasm) -___-
