How good is the macbook for college students?

IPad justifiable for college?

  • I going to start college in August and on the eve of the iPad going on sale I've been thinking about it a lot. I'm planning on taking advantage of student discounts on a Mac Book Pro this summer for college to replace my current 3 year old HP laptop. But after reading countless reviews of the iPad and articles about how it could be a good device for students, I'm wondering if I should get it. I understand it is a tablet/e-reader (sort-of) among other things, and not a laptop replacement because you'd have to dock it to a computer to sync and things like that. With the benefits of the app store, e-textbooks, and iTunes U and so on, the iPad is intriguing. Maybe I can get the iPad and just a cheaper regular MacBook or something. What do you think? Thanks

iPad is primarily for students and professional who travel a lot. There will be plenty of downloadable books on it and many educational apps. It has iWork so creating Word doc, spreadsheet and Powerpoint/Keynote presentation will be amazing and you can immediately share using DropBox,Google Doc,email,iDisk,Box.net and other WEBdav sites which are free and give you extra storage space also and most importantly your documents can be instantly available on every computer in the world if you want. Keyboard is wide enough to type on and if you want an physical keyboard its available for just $30 at many stores. All Blutooth keyboard works with it. It has app that lets you fill out the form and sign it without taking print out so no more hassles of printing out then filling then scanning back n send. It saves a lot of time and effort. But in case you want a print out , there are many apps that let you do it through Wi-Fi or through remote access to desktop connected to a printer. You can download songs, movies, apps, books everything directly you actually dont need to sync it with computer unless there is a firmware update available for iPad. Many University have already uploaded books on it and many will follow. While working on a project you can access whole world of information using different apps using few taps that will save time and enhance the productivity and performance. You can take screen shot convert into Pdf and use it as reference. If you dont have any desktop or laptop, I will suggest a refurbished MacBook from Apple store and iPad. It depends on your budget. I have MacBook Pro, IBM laptop (company has given for some work) now selling MacBook Pro and getting refurb. 27" iMac and 16GB iPad Wi-Fi+3G model. iPad is great for fun too. you can stream movies from Netflix app and can watch latest TV shows for FREE from app abc Player.

Don't buy. Many people don't need lap tops they are essentially useless you will see in college classes 70% of lap top students using facebook / games in class instead of notes. If you are at classes and 100% need a laptop then i suggest waiting until 2 weeks into your classes to decide. (back to school discounts are huge) also you will probably meet someone with an ipad and get an idea of how they use it. I'm in third year university business program and i only use a desktop / blackberry.

In my opinion, the iPad fails as a student device for 1 very important primary reason: typing. As a student, you'll be responsible for cranking out numerous papers between 5 and 15 pages, plus smaller assignments, long emails, etc. As a hand-held device, typing on the iPad is the same as typing on your cell phone, meaning you use your thumbs. Just imagine how much fun it would be to type an essay on your phone. That's functionally the same as what you'd be doing with an iPad, except that iPads are larger, heavier and more unwieldy than your phone. In landscape mode, the keyboard is larger, but that actually makes it worse rather than better. There is a keyboard attachment that includes a stand to hold the iPad upright. The keyboard itself works a treat, but you're very limited by the fact that you need to use it on a desk. It won't work on your lap, on the couch armrest, etc. There is also a case that folds back into a support stand that angles the iPad upward to make typing easier to landscape. However, as mentioned above, the landscape keyboard is proportioned awkwardly and you're still essentially limited to picking at the keyboard with your 2 index fingers because a) you have to lift your arms to type on the ipad rather than resting them flat on a desk as with a normal keyboard, and b) the buttons are strange and hard to hit properly.
