Why does my internet frequently go out but always work shortly after?
-
I have charter. I use a 1 year old (tops), nice modem. I have a splitter that I use to split the cable to my TV and modem. I do everything wireless through a Belkin router. My internet, once a month, twice in one week, once every 2.5 months - will stop working. It always say I have an internet connection, but NO INTERNET ACCESS. The internet is there supposedly. It seems like it must be some sort of IP adress generating issue. Sometimes I call charter, sometimes I fix it myself. Resetting everything works maybe 1/10 times. Sometimes I will reset things, and release my IP adress on my computer and make sure the modem and my computer are grabbing a new one and the same one. Hooking it up directly to the modem never seems to help any more that just resetting it all while connected to the router. Charter is always some outsourced foreigner, and even if not, they rarely do what I ask of them. I know all their internet problem procedures and scripts by now. Usually, once they test my router, they say nothing. recently the guy said it was giving out a weird signal, he said weak once (it didnt seem weak), but mainly just weird. He got a superior, who got a superior, etc - and they didn't know what to do and said they would send someone, and alluded frequently to replacing the cables in my house or whole house or something. I can always get my internet to come back on within 1.5 days tops by resetting it, or it magically works when I wake up the next morning. It just went out for 30 minutes today, and when it came back on, was very slow for about an hour. It also always works when charter finally listens to me and resets my modem remotely and checks to make sure I get's a fresh IP adress. I really don't think I need new cables. Ethernet is in shape but I will try a new one. But they meant my cable cables. And the TV NEVER goes out when this happens, so I don't see why I would need new cables if the TV never goes out. Do you think it could be my cable splitter? Its old - but like I said the tv never goes out, and it connects to the same old splitting device.

Answer:
"I do everything wireless through a Belkin router." Belkin!!! LOL anyways... "It always say I have an internet connection, but NO INTERNET ACCESS." That means you are still connected to your router but your modem is not getting a connection to charter. "I really don't think I need new cables." They have ways of checking to see if the signal is strong enough at the appropriate frequencies and if it's not then they are correct and you are wrong. "TV NEVER goes out when this happens" Right but the TV signal is may be on the same line but runs at a different frequency than the internet so that data doesn't get mixed with the TV channels. "Do you think it could be my cable splitter?" Yes, it could be. I had an old one that was giving me issues in the past, turned out that that inside was not insulated which allowed for plenty of radio interference. Many cable splitters are cr4p. I only use and keep the ones I get from the cable company cause the ones I got at radio shack and target were junk. Here is a tip the cable guy taught me tap on the back of it. If it digs and sound hallow, it's junk also the weight can indicate quality as well. Light ones tend to be cheap.

First thing to do when your internet drops out is to look at your modem to see if the lights look normal. If they do then your service through charter should be okay(barring any back end provisioning issues). If the modem is okay the problem most likely lies with the belkin router. This happens sometimes at my house as well and i just unplug the power from the router and plug it back in and it resolves it almost every time. If your modem is resetting itself then you will also have to powercycle your belkin router and the splitter may be bad or not able to support both tv and internet off of it at the same time anymore. If this is the case charter should be able to run a dedicated line to your house strictly for internet. But if your modem isnt resetting itself then best bet is your router is the cause.
