Need help. dvd-r and burning?

Desperately need help :(!! burning smell from motherboard and long beep?

  • hi, i have a computer coming on monday but i have the new ram (two 4gb sticks) i was just wanting to see how fast they were so i stuck them in my mums desktop pc and replaced them with her two 2gb sticks ( i've done this before with no problems) however when i booted the computer i was aware of a burning smell so i quickly took the power cord out from the back. Now when i boot it up there is a long beep that comes from the motherboard and it doesnt stop ?? plus i can't tell if the burning happens everytime i switch it on or if its just hanging around from before. PLEASE HELP!! my mum will kill me O_O thanks for any help.

    Sounds like you might not have installed the memory properly or maybe knocked something loose or cut a cable. The burning smell is usually a pretty bad sign. You may have damaged beyond repair the motherboard or the RAM or both. Make sure the RAM sticks are seated properly. The long beep is from the BIOS telling you something is really wrong.

That Long beep is a POST test that tells you something is vitally wrong, I hate to tell you this but from the circumstances and that beep, Its most likely a RAM failure due to it being burnt out. Open it up and see if the RAM looks burnt or damaged just to be sure.

Perhaps you forced in incompatible (in the physical sense) sticks on your mother's ancient motherboard. If you reinstalled the old ones and things still didn't work, the socket is probably damaged.

It sounds like her motherboard is toast!
