How to reformat a hard disk?

Why i cant reformat my old hard disk on my new cpu?

  • i had a 80gb seagate sata on my old cpu with a vista OS. i bought a new cpu with an ASUS M3N78-vm motherboard and cant get my hard disk work. i want to reformat it si that i will have a fresh start. but the system cant reformat the hdd somehow. the hdd was detected as well as my dvdrom but when i will boot the vista installation cd, it will display GENERAL PROTECTION FAULT. the hdd is still ok when i transferred it on the old cpu.. please help..

  • Answer:

the hdd is password protected maybe? you could use a live linux cd to format it and check for dist problems as well, check out SUSE if you want to go that route also make sure that the board has sata support by default
