Why can't my computer can't detect my external hard drive?

Ps3 hard drive, into a computer, problem?

  • okay, so my playstation just died, so i removed its hard drive and put it into my computer. all the wires hocked up fine. i turned it on and vista automatically installed the driver software. i restarted the computer. The computer seems to be able to detect the hard drive no problem, but i cant access any of the files. i checked bios, i fiddled about in device manager. but nothing ( i even Ran the computer in Lunix ). does anybody have any other suggestions.

  • Answer:

Firstly, no special driver software should be necessary for a standard hard drive. They all use the same, standard interface to connect. Apparently, the PS3 uses a UFS2 filesystem, and apparently it is encrypted and only readable on the PS3 it came from. If you wanted to access the filesystem you would need to use Linux and install filesystem tools for UFS2 (which are not usually provided as standard). If it is encrypted, you would need to get hold of some sort of key from the PS3 itself, and a suitable decryption tool (which may not exist if it's non-standard encryption).
