How do i get my digital camera to work as a Webcam?

I'm annoyed with my new Vista computer...help?

  • since i got this comuter [which i had to get because my last one stopped working] i have discovered my webcam and digital camera aren't compatable with vista. now i've realised according to the spec' written on the boxes my PC games, including sims 2 [the original game], don't work on my computer. i'm upset cause i have a video on my camera i want on my computer...i can't take pic's or videos on my webcam or camera...and now i don't have any games either! any help?

  • Answer:

digital technology like webcams and digital cameras usually require pieces of software called "Drivers" that are necessary for the devices to work properly. For the webcam and digital camera - look up the brand name for each, go to the website and look for available drivers, download and install them (another way may be to go to google, type in the device/brand name and other useful information along with the words "driver download" and you may find them). There may also be available patches for the Sims 2 to work with Vista. Again, you have to do a little searching. (i went to this site - http://www.vistareadygames.com/showthread.php?t=9 - and they say Sims 2 is playable on Vista 32bit) I can help you further, just need to know the brand/type of webcam and camera and i'll be able to direct you to the driver download that will enable it to work on your computer (that is if you can't manage to find it yourself) Just keep in mind that you DON'T need to buy a new Windows XP disk like everyone else is suggesting, there are cheaper and easier solutions!

You don't need help, that reaction is perfectly normal. Try "downgrading" to XP (I consider it an upgrade personally! It improves the performance.)

Welcome to Microsoft Vista! It sucks. But its the future of Windows computing, so you're just going to have to live with it. Windows 7, due out later this year is built on the Vista engine. Its not likely to really fix anything. If its not too late, you can return your new computer to the place you bought it and buy a PC that still come with Windows XP on it. Dell has several downgrade XP Pro computers that you can buy. Or, you can find a vendor who can sell you XP outright, and just reformat the hard drive and install XP. Otherwise, you'll have to buy new games, buy new hardware, buy new... EDIT: Vista does things differently than XP. Because of that, a lot of hardware doesn't work with Vista, and the drivers are not compatible. Among my customers, I have encountered tens of thousands of dollars worth of hardware and software that just cannot be made to work with Vista. Either the manufacturer has decided to not rewrite their drivers for legacy hardware or Microsoft has rendered the existing drivers useless. EDIT 2: On second thought, send a clear message to Steve (Bill retired) and return your Windows computer and buy a Mac. EDIT 3: Yep, Dads will do that. Tell him thank you, and then ask him to buy you a copy of Microsoft Windows XP Pro. http://www.nextag.com/Microsoft-Windows-XP-Pro-81110824/prices-html At $145 its still cheaper than replacing all your games and hardware. Put the CD in and boot off it. When it finds the previous version of Windows, delete the partition and recreate it. On boot, send it to Windows update for all the drivers. Then anything missing you can deal with on a case by case basis.

This doesnt of course solve the problem unless you are able to download newer drivers, but surely the sensible thing would have been to check whether you would be able to use your old applications on Vista before you bought the new computer.

don't downgrade with out knowing if it will be recoverable, I left XP when vista was 2 weeks old, and will NEVER go back, It was a hard time in the beginning, but i stuck it out. I was a beta tester for windows 7 and will be at the door on the day that it rolls out. Lots of changes, there will be some problems, but they are working to make it the best OS ever. Many ppl are saying that it could be launched by the end of the year. Just type "window 7" in your browser and have a look.

First check to see if your webcam and digital camera have updated drivers which would make them compatible with Vista, if not then your best solution would be to change it back to Windows XP and since it's a relatively new computer, you'd better let a professional do it for you as I don't think your Dad would be too amused if anything went wrong with the XP installation.Just explain to your Dad and ask him if he could take it back to the shop and ask them to install XP on it instead.
