Why do I keep running out of disk space?

I keep getting a warning ‘my C drive is running out of space’?

  • I keep getting a warning ‘my C drive is running out of space’ I have run the defragment and disk clean up but there is still very little room left on my drive .I have looked at the control panel to remove some programs but there are programs that I know little about or the consequence if I remove them i.e. Quick Time, Microsoft .Net Framework 2.0 there are also two Java updates Java (TM) 6 Update 13 and Java (TM) 6 Update2. My PC is running really slow so any help/advice would be much appreciated

  • Answer:

Hard drive space will likely be due to documents and files, rather than programs, in most cases. Look in your My Documents files, especially in the music/pictures folders, and see if there is anything you can purge. Make sure that after deleting them, you empty your recycle bin. Defrags and disk clean ups are unlikely to help much here. When uninstalling software to free disk space, make sure you are uninstalling things such as games, because all of the programs you mentioned in the original post are dependencies, and you may find that things just don't quite work right if you remove them. If your pc is running slow, and you are using Windows XP, then try this: 1. Click on your start menu 2. Click on the 'Run' option 3. Type in 'msconfig' in the box (no quotes), and press ok 4. Choose the radio option for 'Selective Startup' 5. Uncheck the box for 'Load startup items' 6. Press 'OK' and reboot the computer. This starts your computer up with all startup software bypassed. If you notice that this helps with your slow pc, you know it is because of software starting up, as opposed to a hardware or disk space issue. You can undo these changes if you are worried about antivirus software, etc. being bypassed, or you can leave it like this. Most antivirus software will find a way to start up even with startup items bypassed. If bypassing startup items does not increase PC speed, you may be looking at a hardware issue, or a deeply embedded software problem which may require a system restore.

This has happened to many users with hard drive partition setting. You may have C drive for operating system plus another drive for all data files. Go on to "My Computer", find out what other partition is, if "D" is the CD drive this will be "E" or "F". When you install other application/s, set the target to "E" or "F" will eliminate that warning.

Try Compressing Files; Left Click New Compressed Folder. Drag Unused files into there and then delete the originals If you ever want to get the files back just open the Compressed Folder and click extract DO NOT DELETE Microsoft .net Framework as this is essential to make sure many programs work. Java Updates are nessceary or website wont work. Quick Time can be taken out and is not neede at all. Hope this helps

IF you are getting that error. it is probably due to having too much music/movies taking up all of your space. my solution would be to go to Walmart and purchase an external drive for storing nonessential data. I would not un-install any of those programs or updates they are all important. As far as the computer running slow you are probably loaded up with virus/spyware. rule ofthumbb if you don't know what programs that you need then you are better off paying a computer repair shop 75-100 to fix your computer for you. It will save you a lot of time and heart ache

Look into your videos. highlight the ones that you don't want (ctrl+click on each) and it should show you how big they are combined. I once had 50 GB of videos. Once i deleted them, my computer was fast again. Also, hold the windows button (the flag) and press R. This should open up run. Type in msconfig. It should ask for admin. Once your in, go to the startup tab. Uncheck all programs that you don't use on startup. All of this put together will greatly increase your space and speed.

Then you may have to buy more RAM.

If it is windows and is not a 10 year old computer, I am stumped, Most every PC sold in the last 5 years has had a 30g up to 1terabyte Hard Drive. That is alot of space. Windows takes about 4-5 gigs , system restore takes 3 or so, so a typicall install takes up about 7-8gigs. Add a few programs, you may be at 9gigs, that should still leave about 20 gigs at the least free. First off, make a backup while it is stable and working. Not a system restore, an actuall backup. 2nd link explains that a bit. Now got it all safe and backed up to another medium. clean it up, use the mv or commands and move or copy that data around. I am still stumpered, but look at windows secrets and back up that hard drive, then remove or just move all the stuff to a DVD-R. Media files and stuff are data hogs. On windows, open MyComputer, or Windows Explorer, I like windows explorer, right click Drive C: then Properties, this should show you a graph of how much used space and free space there is.
