Can I still boot after punting my hard drive into a hard drive enclosure kit?
-
I wanna put a hard drive of one of my old laptop computers into a rocket-fish hard drive enclosure. I am positive that there will be no problems with compatibility between the hard drive and the enclosure kit but I recently realized something that makes me nervous. Basically I want to know If, after I put the laptop hard drive into the enclosure kit, can I still boot from that hard drive without having to reinstall an OS and wiping the drive? or more specifically can I boot from it when I use it on a different (faster) computer? (little extra information that may or may not be needed): I don't know If I completely got the question across but the additional information is that the OS is a vista home premium, and the enclosure kit I got is a rocketfish USB3.0 2.5" SATA Hard drive enclosure. I truthfully don't care if what I am doing is considered stupid or bad but there is some software on that hard drive that I paid for that is no longer being distributed and I don't want to lose it. plus I don't have the installer for that program anymore so other then ether doing the enclosure and having it boot-able, putting it in my newer computer and messing with the register (which I don't want to do), or leaving the computer as is and having to keep it around for when I need the program I have other choice. BTW the newer computer already has an OS and has programs of its on on it.

Answer:
If the old comuter supports booting from usb, then yes you can boot from it. it will be incredibly slow, however, as the transfer rate for usb is nowhere near that of a hdd. as to the second computer booting from it, it may be possible, but you would have to update and change all the drivers to be compatible with the new laptop, and it also needs to be ableo boot from usb. to keep the current operating system for the new one, you will also need to install a boot manager which will allow you to choose which device and OS you want to boot to.

No, the installed OS on the drive in the enclosure won't boot on a different computer, because there's a different hardware platform. If it boots at all, it'll be in safe mode.
