There are several data recovery software applications that will usually restore data following an accidental re-format. Free ones often will only recover a limited number of Gb, so are a bit frustrating to use. Acronis Disk Director works well as does Spotmanu Gold 2012. However neither of these are free. If your data is important, its possibly worth spending dosh to recover it. With either you can make a boot disk on another machine so that you can start the problem machine IF you had reformatted the system disk. I am assuming here that you did a quick re-format, rather than a 'low level' one. A quick reformat only hides the MBR, all the data is in fact still on your HDD, you just can't see it. IMPORTANT: DO NOT WRITE ANYTHING TO THE HDD IN QUESTION. I have usually managed to recover most data from reformatted HDDs, so do not give up hope. The moral of course is...always keep a backup!
