Is ST_GeomFromText better than providing direct geometry?

Hard Disk Geometry - Solaris?

  • Can any one explain / direct to good web content (pref. with image) for the hard disk geometry. I am looking forward to have better understanding of the following concepts (wherein i m standing confused :D ): Sector, Block, VTOC, Cylinder, Platter.. if hard disk is made up of 3 disks.. then in all, it contains 3 platters or 6 platters ?? Various recovery blocks.. Is there any place we can better understand how data is written on hard drive and how filesystem is organized. Any help, sincerely appreciated... Thanks,

  • Answer:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cylinder-head-sector Take a look here. Recovery blocks are just additional blocks that can be reasigned when some blocks get damaged due to hardware error... so disk space is not reduced and it is "fixed". For file systems, you would need to be specific which file system you are interested in. As even solaris can use couple of them, I believe, and there are much more.
